Independent Living

Independent living complexes are a great option for your loved one who doesn’t need assistance with daily tasks, but would like help with housekeeping and are looking for companionship. Independent living is on the lighter end of assisted living. Senior apartments are very similar to standard apartment living, but the community is centered on 55+ residents. Independent living communities are not regulated by the state, so the monthly cost is variable.

Residential Care Apartment Complex (RCAC)

A Residential Care Apartment Complex is a community where five (5) or more adults live and receive care. These apartments are spacious, with at least 250 square feet dedicated to the bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and living area.

The apartment complexes have dedicated staff providing the care your loved one may need to get through their day. Residents are free to come and go from the complex, and the doors are only locked after hours (which are set by the community). A power of attorney can not typically be activated upon admission in this setting.

Assisted Living

Assisted living is a type of residential facility that offers assistance with daily activities for individuals who can get around independently. These communities provide a homelike environment where residents receive supportive care from staff 24 hours a day. Typically, residents have private or shared rooms and bathrooms, a shared dining room, and a shared living room.

Assisted living communities are licensed as Community Based Residential Facilities (CBRFs). At the very least, room furnishings generally include a bed (including mattress, box spring, and headboard) and a nightstand/dresser.

Memory Care

Memory care is a specialized form of Assisted Living that caters specifically to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. These communities offer a safe, supportive environment where residents receive round-the-clock care and supervision. Memory care communities, are licensed as Community Based Residential Facilities (CBRFs). These facilities create a comfortable environment where residents can receive care 24 hours a day. Typically, residents have private room and bathroom, a shared dining room, and a shared living room.

Memory care facilities typically provide a bed, including a mattress, box spring, headboard, and a nightstand/dresser. Residents are encouraged to bring their own belongings to make their living space feel as homelike as possible.

Assisted Living vs Memory Care

While both provide support for seniors, memory care communities specialize in caring for individuals with dementia. Memory cares offer more intense care levels and higher staffing ratios to meet the unique needs of individuals with memory loss.

Caregivers in memory cares are trained to handle challenging behaviors associated with dementia and are prepared to assist residents who may be at risk of wandering.

Some memory care communities have delayed egress doors for security, while others use wander guard systems with alarms.
